BENGALURU/MADIKERI: As Covid cases surge once again in neighboring Kerala and a sub-variant of the virus is detected, the Karnataka government has imposed mandatory face mask requirements for individuals aged 60 and above, as well as those with comorbidities. Additionally, individuals showing symptoms of fever, cold, and cough must also wear masks, according to an announcement by Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in Madikeri on Monday. This initiative is part of the state’s efforts to safeguard those most susceptible to the virus.

Concerning potential restrictions on Sabarimala pilgrims returning from Kerala, Minister Rao clarified that there are no curbs on movements or gatherings. Nevertheless, monitoring in districts bordering Kerala, including Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, and Dakshina Kannada, will persist.

Minister Rao stated that an official order mandating face masks and other guidelines will be issued following a meeting with the technical advisory committee on Covid on Tuesday. The committee, led by Dr. K Ravi from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, is expected to provide additional guidelines on precautions.

Over the last three months, Karnataka has reported 58 active Covid-19 cases, with 11 individuals hospitalized and one Covid-related death. While emphasizing the absence of an immediate need for concern, Minister Rao acknowledged one death due to Covid-19, noting that the individual also had comorbidities.

Highlighting the importance of preparedness and learning from past experiences, Minister Rao disclosed that the health department has ordered 3 lakh medical kits, PPE kits, and an increased number of rapid antigen tests (RAT), particularly in regions bordering Kerala and the state capital, Bengaluru.

Mock drills are currently underway in all government hospitals to assess medical infrastructure preparedness for potential emergencies, covering bed availability, staff readiness, oxygen plant functionality, and essential medicine supplies.

Minister Rao ruled out imposing movement restrictions at this stage but emphasized the necessity for stringent monitoring. He reassured the public, stating that there is no immediate cause for concern, and movement restrictions are deemed unnecessary. However, he underscored the importance of compliance with the mandatory wearing of masks, pledging to monitor and respond based on emerging trends.
