Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday said the Karnataka government is considering relocating the High Court to a new, modern campus within the city due to space and infrastructure constraints at the existing heritage building.
Plan to address space crunch at High Court
Speaking during the ‘Walk With Bengaluru’ event at Cubbon Park, Mr. Shivakumar said the move comes in response to repeated appeals from the Chief Justice, judges, and advocates. “We can’t do anything with the current building; it can rather be converted into a monument,” he said.
He added that the government would consult members of the Bar to identify suitable land for the relocation. “This is a big problem, and I will sort it out to the best of my ability,” Mr. Shivakumar assured.
Race Course area among options
The Deputy Chief Minister indicated that the Race Course area is one of the potential sites being considered for the new campus. “The lawyers have told me about the Race Course area, but let’s see. Legal options for this need to be checked,” he noted.
He further said that Bengaluru City Commissioner has also suggested alternative locations for the project, and the government will evaluate all available options before making a final decision.
The existing High Court building, located opposite Vidhana Soudha, is a heritage structure dating back to the 19th century. While it remains one of Bengaluru’s architectural landmarks, officials and advocates have long complained of inadequate space and outdated infrastructure.
