Karnataka on alert as 16 active Covid cases reported amid Asia surge
Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao confirmed that the state currently has 16 active Covid-19 cases. The update comes as parts of Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong, witness a spike in infections, prompting health departments across India to stay vigilant.
Nationally, India had 257 active Covid cases as of May 19, as per data reported by PTI. Authorities clarified that most of these are mild cases, not requiring hospitalisation.
A recent high-level meeting, led by the Director General of Health Services and attended by officials from ICMR, NCDC, and other key health bodies, reaffirmed that India’s overall Covid situation remains stable and manageable.
The Union Health Ministry is keeping a close watch on global trends and has advised hospitals nationwide to monitor for signs of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI).
India’s robust surveillance mechanisms, including the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR’s tracking systems, continue to keep tabs on emerging respiratory threats, including Covid-19.
Officials reiterated that while the numbers are low, early detection and preparedness remain critical to avoid any resurgence.
