BENGALURU: Following the Karnataka police’s recent crackdown on speeding, 76 drivers have been booked for exceeding the 130kmph speed limit on highways. The enforcement actions took place on the Bengaluru-Mysuru access-controlled highway on Thursday and Friday, with the majority of violations involving SUVs and MUVs. The state police had previously announced their decision to register FIRs against drivers surpassing the 130kmph threshold, with an acceptable margin of 5-10 kmph. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat speeding, a major contributor to fatal road accidents.

ADGP (Traffic and Road Safety) Alok Kumar highlighted that about 90% of fatal accidents are attributed to speeding and reckless driving. On the first day of the crackdown, FIRs were filed against 33 drivers, while 43 drivers were booked the following day. The majority of these cases were registered between Ramanagara and Mandya. Errant drivers could face imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of Rs 1,000, or both.

In addition, the police have been actively addressing the issue of dazzling headlights, with over 28,000 cases registered in July alone. Bengaluru topped the list with 9,046 cases, followed by Mangaluru (1,365), Vijayanagara (1,342), Raichur (1,178), Hubballi-Dharwad (1,096), and Shivamogga (1,085). The ongoing efforts reflect a strong commitment to improving road safety and reducing traffic-related fatalities.
