Karnataka Pushes Forward with Plans for Bengaluru’s Second Airport
Karnataka is set to establish a second airport near Bengaluru, narrowing down its choices to Nelamangala and Kanakapura Road after evaluating seven potential sites. This strategic move is part of the state’s efforts to expand its aviation infrastructure and accommodate the increasing demand for air travel.
With passenger numbers at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) projected to reach 90 million by 2033, the urgency to finalize a location and secure Union government approval has intensified. The urgency is further amplified by Tamil Nadu’s progress in developing an airport in Hosur, which could divert air traffic away from Bengaluru if the state’s project is delayed.
The two shortlisted sites, each covering 4,400 acres, are located 30-35 km from Bengaluru and would enhance connectivity for passengers traveling from the southern and western parts of the city. Though Vasantha Narsapura near Dabbaspet had been proposed by Home Minister G Parameshwara as an alternative, it is now considered a lower priority, as it better serves Tumakuru’s needs than Bengaluru’s.
To accelerate the project, Karnataka may invite Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the successful operator of KIA, to lead the development. This approach could bypass the non-compete clause that prevents the construction of another airport until 2033, allowing BIAL to manage both the existing and new airports. A senior official has cautioned that if Karnataka doesn’t act swiftly, Hosur could become Bengaluru’s default secondary airport, shifting traffic and economic benefits across state lines.
