Bengaluru: Karnataka slipped by two positions to the 9th spot in the latest report on Health Index for the year 2015-16, released jointly by the World Bank, Union Health Ministry and NITI Aayog, on February 9.
Kerala is in the first place in the index while Uttara Pradesh is in the last position.
More importantly, neighbouring South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh are ahead of Karnataka in the health index. Maharashtra has retained its 6th position and Andhra has improved its position. Karnataka, which occupied the 7th spot in 2014-15 health index slipped to 9th place in 2015-16.
According to the positions, in the Health Index, the first 10 states are positioned as follows: Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal.
The index was prepared based on various criterion such as mortality rate of newborn babies, children below 5-years-old, immunity system among children, treatment facility for HIV and tuberculosis, health service in rural areas, cardiac healthcare in district-levels, quality of public health service and working system of health institutions.
