Bengaluru: Just days after Revanna took charge as Karnataka’s new transport minister, he has planned to come up with a new system to introduce number plates to all vehicles across Karnataka.
Karnataka will be the first Indian state to introduce this system and put a stop to differently designed number plates being used by vehicle owners.
The Karnataka transport department has already called for tenders and over 66 lakh vehicles across the state might soon get new uniform number plates.
At present a number plate costs a minimum of Rs. 1000 but with the new system the vehicle owners will have to pay Rs. 1200 extra, according to reports.
What are the benefits of the new system:
1. Numbers displayed on the plate will be bigger in size.
2. Radium infused colors used on the plates will be helpful to night travellers.
3. Separate letters for private, rented vehicles and buses.
4. The characters on the plate will be visible within an angle of 45 degrees.
5. Chromium hologram based HSNP.
As per the Motor Vehicle Act, these will be high security registration plates and will put an end to vehicle thefts and misuse by anti-social elements.
It is learnt that, even after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) received the CCTV footage of the culprits’ movements in connection with the sensational killing of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh, they have been unable to nab the suspects. This new system might be an attempt by the state government to put an end to more of such criminal activities in the state.
