KARNATAKA: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms across several districts of Karnataka over the next five days, with heavy rainfall possible in parts of the state during the weekend. Coastal districts Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are expected to receive further showers, while Mysuru, Kodagu and Chamarajanagar may experience heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds at isolated places.

The forecast issued on Friday, October 23, indicates unsettled weather across coastal Karnataka and several districts of South Interior Karnataka. Residents have been advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions and follow official advisories.

Dakshina Kannada and Udupi to receive more rain

Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorm-related showers at many places on Friday. Uttara Kannada may also receive light rain or thundershowers across several locations.

Rain is expected to continue in parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi from Saturday through Tuesday, although the intensity and distribution may vary. Coastal Karnataka is also under a weather warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms on Friday, with thunderstorm and lightning activity possible on Saturday.

The forecast comes as the northeast monsoon continues to influence weather conditions across southern India.

Heavy rain possible in Mysuru, Kodagu and Chamarajanagar

Mysuru, Kodagu and Chamarajanagar districts may experience heavy rain accompanied by strong winds or thunderstorms at isolated places on Friday.

Several other districts in South Interior Karnataka, including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Mandya, Ramanagara, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Chikkaballapur, Kolar and Tumakuru, are likely to receive moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms at many places.

Light rain or thundershowers are also possible in parts of Ballari, Vijayanagara, Chitradurga and Davanagere.

The IMD has indicated that heavy rainfall may continue in several areas of South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, until Sunday, October 25. Residents should monitor updated forecasts, particularly if travelling during periods of heavy rain or thunderstorms.

North Interior Karnataka to see mixed weather

Weather conditions are expected to vary across North Interior Karnataka. Light rain or thundershowers are likely at one or two places in Dharwad, Gadag and Haveri districts on Friday, with wind speeds potentially reaching 30–40 kmph.

Meanwhile, predominantly dry weather is forecast in Bagalkot, Belagavi, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir districts.

Thunderstorm and lightning warnings have also been issued for parts of North Interior Karnataka. Local conditions may differ, so residents should check the latest district-level advisories before making outdoor plans.

IMD advises people to remain cautious

With rain, lightning and thunderstorms expected across several parts of Karnataka, residents are advised to take precautions during severe weather.

People should seek shelter inside a safe building when thunderstorms begin and avoid open areas, exposed locations and standing beneath trees during lightning activity. Motorists should drive carefully in heavy rain, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and watch for reduced visibility and slippery roads.

People working outdoors, including farmers, should pay particular attention to weather alerts and suspend exposed activities during lightning and strong winds.

Residents in low-lying areas should also remain alert to possible localised waterlogging during intense rainfall.

Weather updates to remain important through the weekend

The latest forecast points to continued rain and thunderstorm activity across coastal and southern Karnataka, with heavy rain possible in selected districts through Sunday. Showers may continue in parts of the coastal belt and southern interior beyond the weekend, though conditions are expected to vary by location.

Residents are advised to follow the latest IMD bulletins and instructions from local authorities, as forecasts and warnings may be updated according to changing weather conditions.
