A School In Kolar Unfairly Makes Its Students Clean Toilets

It’s one thing to train children to perform chores right from school, but not to the extent that we see in the recent video that went viral on social media, two of them, both in their school uniforms, bent over dirty toilets, at a government school at the Bynahalli village in Kolar.

What’s worse is that the incident took place at a junior primary school, which makes it only fair that the locals come forward to question the school authorities.

This is not the first time that the school sees such an incident as Karnataka chief minister Sidaramaiah had earlier warned the school against such actions. In fact, reports suggest that this is the third of such cases in a matter of just two months, and one can only imagine the state of these students, all loaded with academics and activities, further burdened with a chore as unpleasant as this.

The school sure has been setting a bad example, with a few others in the state soon following suit. Another residential school in Kolar, namely the Yelavali Morarji Desai school was caught sending students down a toilet pit, an incident that led to downright outrage from the side of the public, leading the education department to suspend the headmistress.

A similar incident that took place at the Government Model Primary School in Bangalore led to the arrest of its headmistress.

True, children are innocent and will do everything to please those in authority, which makes it all the more important to protect their rights, lest they become tomorrow’s victims. Sadly the school does not seem to think likewise, using this as an easy opportunity, probably in an attempt to cut costs that would otherwise be involved in hiring a new staff to see to its overall cleaning.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister K Shivkumar wisely commented

“We shouldn’t misuse the children. Earlier NSS, Seva Dal camps use to give training for kids to clean the garden, planting the saplings but we haven’t given anyone permission to rope in children for cleaning the toilets,”

And he is right in saying this. So, in the end, we can at least be grateful to the fact that the government, on its part is looking into the matter and expressing its concern on this.
