Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to venture into the organized freight business by introducing 20 cargo trucks. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy inspected one of the trucks at the KSRTC central office, with the official launch scheduled for December 23.
In a bid to boost non-fare revenue, the government-owned bus operator has initiated its freight business named ‘Namma Cargo.’ Despite already increasing its monthly freight traffic revenue from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2.5 crore, the KSRTC aims to expand its operations. The introduction of 20 ‘Namma Cargo’ trucks marks a significant step in this direction, according to a source within the KSRTC.
These six-wheeled trucks are capable of carrying up to 7 tonnes of freight each. The KSRTC plans to target packed items from industries such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, food, and hospitality. Leveraging the well-established brand name of the KSRTC is seen as a key strategy for success in the freight business, as mentioned by an official.
The cargo trucks will initially operate within Karnataka, focusing on the KSRTC’s 14 divisions in southern and coastal Karnataka. While the KSRTC’s fleet includes 4,000 buses capable of carrying luggage, the focus will remain on utilizing cargo trucks for freight transportation. The performance of the ‘Namma Cargo’ trucks will be evaluated before any potential expansion of operations.
