KSRTC mulls over new initiative to track buses through App

Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is planning to introduce a Global Positioning System (GPS) based ‘Vehicle Trialing and Monitoring System’ (VTMS) for all buses to monitor their movement.

Currently, 6,165 buses of BMTC (Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation) and 1,972 KSRTC buses are fitted with VMTS and the KSRT now plans to extend this system to all four corporations.

Advantages of VMTS

The VMTS helps to track the movement of the bus and send the information to the central server on Real Time basis. This will facilitate the authorities to get exact information on the location of the bus at their fingertips in order to save fuel and check the efficiency of drivers and plug issues concerning vehicle breakdown. The systems enables to monitor the speed of the bus, route taken , period and location of parking during intervals and deviations if any like opting for bypass roads to evade traffic jams causing inconvenience to customers.

Meeting of officials from KSRTC, BMTC, NEKRTC and NWKRTC held recently decided to submit a proposal for the early implementation of the project.

The Estimated cost of the project is likely to exceed Rs 100 crore and plans are on the anvil to seek financial assistance from the Union Ministry of Transport and Highways.

What VMTS means to passengers

Since the information will be available on Online/dedicated App , passengers can track the bus and decide the future course of action. The information will be displayed on a digital panel at all bus –stations to facilitate passengers to get updates on the time of arrival and departure of the bus. The relatives and friends awaiting arrival/ departure of their near and dear ones from/to distant places ones can also plan accordingly.

If implemented properly, the new systems can bring about sea change in the functioning of state owned Corporation known for efficient service providing leeway to incorporate more amenities as well as increase revenue generation and fuel efficiency.
