Bengaluru: In the wake of protests staged against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, petitions challenging the imposition of CrPC section 144 in Bengaluru will be heard by the Karnataka High Court on Friday, December 20.
Two of the petitioners in this matter are Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Gowda and Karnataka MLA Sowmya Reddy.
The petitions challenge the orders issued by City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao to impose section 144 in the city on Wednesday, December 18 night. The orders were issued ahead of several planned protests that were meant to be carried out on December 19.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Pradeep Singh will hear the matter tomorrow.
Under section 144 of the CrPC, no groups larger than four people are allowed to gather and conduct any kind of procession or assembly. However, the filed petitions state that citizens have a right to protest and assemble peacefully under Articles 19(2) and (3) respectively.
