Landlord charged for renting property to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants
A 50-year-old landlord named Ambarish faces legal charges for leasing his property to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants without following mandatory registration procedures. The case surfaced amid a citywide crackdown ordered by Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, responding to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ directive to track illegal Pakistani nationals residing in the city.
On May 2, Amruthahalli police received a tip-off about a Bangladeshi family living in a labor shed behind a government school in Dasarahalli, northeast Bengaluru. Sub-inspector Sunil Kumar KB and his team located the couple—Mahmadh Mathin (30) and Rajiya Sulthan (27)—along with their two minor children. The family admitted to entering India illegally through West Bengal and settling in Bengaluru after moving through various cities. They worked at a construction site and lived in the shed owned by Ambarish.
After confirming their illegal status, police handed them over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO), who ordered their detention in Doddagubbi, Kothanur. Instead of registering a criminal case—which would prolong their stay during trial—authorities began deportation proceedings.
However, Ambarish was found guilty of breaching rental guidelines for foreign nationals. He failed to file “Form C” with the local police within 24 hours of their arrival, a legal requirement meant to track foreigners’ identification and whereabouts.
Police revealed that Ambarish had rented multiple sheds to other Rohingya families as well, collecting thousands in rent. Investigations continue into whether the Bangladeshi couple possessed undisclosed Indian ID documents.
Ambarish faces charges under the Foreigners Act, a bailable offense, with a chargesheet to be filed in court soon.
