Leaning Transformer in Indiranagar Sparks Fears of Potential Tragedy
Bengaluru: Residents of Indiranagar are raising the alarm over a severely tilting pole-mounted transformer that’s become a safety hazard. Positioned precariously on a leaning metal pole and a damaged concrete base, the transformer is dangerously close to collapsing — right in a busy area that sees constant pedestrian movement.
The structure, which lies just beside the Indiranagar police quarters and opposite the BWSSB office, is slightly detached from the footpath and stands along a road connecting to 12th Main, a popular weekend hangout.
“This is nothing short of a ticking time bomb,” said Susmita, a local resident. “The base is shattered. If it falls, it could be fatal. Look at what happened in Mumbai — a hoarding collapse killed 14 during a storm. We don’t want a repeat.”
A Sunday visit by TOI confirmed visible cracks and instability at the base. Surprisingly, no official complaint had been filed as of then, despite the grave danger posed by the structure.
When approached, a Bescom official acknowledged the issue and promised an immediate inspection and corrective action.
The situation highlights the urgent need for proactive civic safety checks, especially in high-traffic zones. Waiting for a disaster to prompt action could prove too costly.
