In a major step toward globalising India’s education landscape, the University of Liverpool has received formal approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to open its first-ever international campus in Bengaluru. This development aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to internationalise the Indian higher education system.

The Bengaluru branch is expected to commence academic sessions by 2026-2027, offering courses in law, health sciences, and business. With admissions likely starting in 2026, students in India will soon have access to world-class education without leaving the country.

This expansion builds on Liverpool’s existing regional collaborations — including research work with NIMHANS in Karnataka.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones called this a significant achievement and emphasized that the Bengaluru campus would extend the university’s research partnerships while delivering high-quality education and skill development. He highlighted the university’s aim to foster a robust research ecosystem that supports both local industry and global academia.

The University of Liverpool now joins a prestigious list of international institutions bringing their campuses to India, such as the Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), Victoria University and Western Sydney University (Australia), and the Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy).

Meanwhile, the University of Southampton is also gearing up to open its Indian campus in Gurgaon, aiming to admit its first batch soon.
