Lokayukta finds envelopes with Rs 21,000 while raiding offices in Bangalore

In a major development, Lokayukta Police conducted raids on the offices of the Legal Metrology Department in Bengaluru, uncovering an envelope containing ₹21,000 at the office of Assistant Controller K Seema Magi. The envelope was found during a search at Maapana Soudha, the administrative block of the department, on Tuesday. This followed a sealing of 13 offices, including those of joint controllers, assistant controllers, and inspectors, on Monday after a visit by 40 teams led by Lokayukta Justice BS Patil and Upa Lokayuktas Justice KN Phaneendra and Justice B Veerappa.

The teams had waited for the officials, but upon finding the offices locked and the staff absent, the Lokayukta ordered the sealing. On Tuesday, the offices were reopened for investigation, leading to the discovery of cash in Seema Magi’s office. The officials who had been absent were summoned to explain their actions, but their responses were reportedly unsatisfactory.

The Lokayukta also found that the officials failed to maintain mandatory registers for movement and cash transactions. Some claimed to be on leave but had not submitted formal leave applications, and records of complaints received and resolved were not kept. An investigation has been launched into the cash found in the office, and the Lokayukta has directed the department to submit detailed reports on inspections conducted, actions taken against violators, and checks on weighing instruments at fuel stations and weighbridges, among other concerns.
