Lokayukta Slams BBMP: Clean Up or Face the Heat
Bengaluru: The Karnataka Lokayukta has pulled up BBMP officials for failing to streamline the city’s garbage collection and disposal system, despite levying a user fee from every household. During a recent hearing of a suo motu case, Justice B.S. Patil, known for his firm stance on civic accountability, expressed strong displeasure over the reappearance of garbage black spots across Bengaluru.
“You cannot collect separate taxes for waste disposal and still fail to act responsibly,” he told officials, warning that neglect of basic civic duties was tarnishing the city’s global reputation. Justice Patil emphasized the need for a structured disposal mechanism and suggested using sim-enabled CCTV cameras to monitor hotspots and deter illegal dumping.
Over the past month, the Lokayukta has reviewed solid waste management in multiple zones — including East, South, RR Nagar, and Dasarahalli — uncovering widespread negligence. Lokayukta officers, after on-ground inspections, submitted photographic evidence of garbage piling up across the city.
Justice Patil handed over the report to BBMP officials and rebuked them for their inaction. “Wake up from your slumber. Your working style must change,” he said.
Ramamani V.K., COO of Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd, responded that additional engineers were being appointed, and tenders were floated for more waste compactors. She sought four months to fix the gaps.
Unimpressed, the Lokayukta warned of unannounced inspections and demanded that officials eliminate black spots citywide as a top priority.
