Lokayukta Takes Action Against Garbage Dumping in Bengaluru’s Sir M Visvesvaraya Layout
In a decisive move to tackle the growing issue of garbage dumping on vacant sites, the Lokayukta has initiated a suo motu case and ordered the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to issue notices to site owners for failing to maintain cleanliness. This directive follows discussions with officials from BDA, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) regarding the inefficiencies in waste management within Rajarajeshwari Nagar, particularly in Sir M Visvesvaraya Layout.
The Lokayukta highlighted that waste collection, transportation, and disposal in Sir M Visvesvaraya Layout are not on par with other areas of the RR Nagar Zone. Although the layout has not been officially transferred to the BBMP, it has been collecting garbage, while BDA has yet to pay the dues for these services.
BDA officials have been instructed to issue notices to owners of vacant sites where garbage accumulation and overgrown vegetation have become a nuisance. Owners are required to clean their properties or will face the costs of BBMP cleaning services. Additionally, the Lokayukta mandated the installation and maintenance of proper streetlights in the layout and directed the Chief Commissioner of BBMP to ensure adequate manpower and resources, including auto tippers, to effectively address waste collection and management issues in Sir M Visvesvaraya Layout.
