Bengaluru: Almost 15 to 20 LPG gas cylinders caught fire and exploded at an illegal gas filling station, prompting people to run out of their homes and created panic on Saturday, March 19.
The incident happened at Mahalakshmi Gas Agency, near Vidyapeeth Circle in Vivekananda Nagar, Kathriguppe in Banashankari Stage III.
The explosions which started around 5:30am left the gas station completely gutted. A few shops along with two cars, a bike and a tanker also got destroyed.
The residents who heard the blasts alerted the police and fire officials. No casualties were reported.
The residents in the area said that the intensity of the blast was so high that houses even on 2nd and 3rd floor got affected.
A fire official confirmed that the fire was caused by a gas leakage. The fire officials got into action only after all the cylinders blasted and it took five hours for three fire fighting vehicles to defuse the fire.
“There were 15 to 20 LPG cylinders weighing 15 kg at the godown. These were being used to refill gas into 5 kg cylinders,” the fire official said.
The Banshankari police station has registered a case regarding the incident. Mallikarjun, the owner of the agency is absconding.
