BENGALURU: The Kempegowda Bus Station, one of India’s busiest transport hubs, is set for a major revamp through a public-private partnership, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced in the state budget. The redevelopment will transform the semi-circular station into a modern transit hub with commercial spaces.

Despite the ambitious plan, officials from the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) stated that they currently lack detailed information about the project. A BMTC representative also confirmed that no formal proposal for the redevelopment had been submitted.

Constructed in 1969 on the former Dharmambudhi Lake, the bus station—commonly called Majestic, after a now-demolished theatre—serves both city and intercity routes. Additionally, the government plans to build a satellite bus terminal in KR Puram and a state-of-the-art facility in Mysuru’s Bannimantap, with an investment of ₹120 crore.

Public transport is also set for a green upgrade. In 2025-26, Karnataka’s Road Transport Corporations (RTCs) will introduce 14,750 electric buses under various central schemes, including 9,000 for BMTC. Furthermore, 1,000 diesel buses will be leased under the Gross Cost Contract model.

To support these expansions, the state has guaranteed a ₹2,000-crore loan for the RTCs. So far, 2,381 diesel and 716 electric buses have been added this year.
