Bengaluru: A 35-year-old man accused in a sexual offence case allegedly attempted suicide when a police team arrived at his residence to arrest him. The accused, identified as Raghavendra, is now facing an additional case after police said he consumed poison to evade arrest.
Arrest operation led to dramatic rescue
According to police, Chandra Layout Police had registered a case against Raghavendra under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on July 8. Acting on information that he was present at his house in Thalagattapura, a police team reached the residence in the early hours of Saturday to arrest him.
On seeing the police, Raghavendra allegedly locked the main door from inside and refused to cooperate. Officers then obtained a spare key from the house owner and entered the premises.
Police said the accused locked himself inside the bathroom. When officers forced the bathroom door open, they found him lying unconscious on the floor. The incident reportedly took place between 1.30 am and 2 am.
Accused allegedly consumed poison
While being taken to a hospital in Vijayanagar, Raghavendra informed police that he had consumed poison. He was admitted for treatment and remains under medical care.
Based on a complaint filed by D. Kishore, Police Sub-Inspector attached to Chandra Layout Police Station, Thalagattapura Police registered a fresh FIR against Raghavendra.
Police said the new case has been booked under Section 226 of the BNS, which relates to attempting suicide to compel or restrain the lawful exercise of official powers.
Further investigation into both cases is underway.
