Bengaluru: A 52-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his aged and paralysed mother by throwing her from the fourth floor of a residential building in the city, police said.

The accused, identified as Venkatesh C alias Dasharath, is charged with the murder of his 75-year-old mother Savitramma C. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at 3rd Stage, BEML Layout in RR Nagar.

Incident and arrest

According to police, the accused allegedly carried his mother to the fourth floor of the building and threw her down, resulting in her death on the spot. The incident came to light when the house owner, E Vikram, heard a loud thud from behind the building and alerted authorities.

Police stated that Vikram, who resides on the ground floor, had rented out the upper floors of the building. The accused was staying on the first floor.

Based on Vikram’s complaint, a case of murder has been registered, and the accused was taken into custody shortly after the incident.

Accused cites financial and emotional distress

During preliminary interrogation, Venkatesh reportedly told police that he had been under severe financial and emotional strain while caring for his mother, who had been bedridden for several years following a stroke.

He said his father had passed away around a decade ago, after which he assumed responsibility for his mother’s care. Approximately five years ago, she suffered a paralysing stroke, requiring constant attention.

According to police sources, the accused claimed he had to quit his job to care for her and was struggling to manage medical expenses. He also stated that there were no signs of her recovery, which added to his distress.

Investigation underway

Police officials have initiated a detailed investigation into the case, including verifying the accused’s statements and gathering further evidence. Authorities are also examining the circumstances leading up to the incident.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further legal proceedings will follow based on the findings.

Conclusion

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about the pressures faced by caregivers and the need for stronger social and medical support systems. While the accused has cited distress as a reason, police emphasised that the case will be pursued strictly under the law as a serious criminal offence.
