On Tuesday at 2:13 pm, a 30-year-old man named Siddarth from Bihar attempted to jump onto the tracks (suicide)  at Jnanabharathi Metro Station in Bengaluru. As a train approached, the station controller and team acted quickly to avert tragedy by activating the Emergency Trip System (ETS), which halted the train and saved Siddarth.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) spokesperson revealed that security officer Rashmi was instrumental in the rescue. She promptly used the ETS to cut the power and stop the train, allowing for Siddarth, who had fallen between the tracks, to be safely rescued by alert security personnel. The swift response prevented what could have been a fatal incident.

Police reported that Siddarth, who lives with his wife in Kengeri, is facing severe financial hardship and significant debt, which may have contributed to his distress. Thankfully, he did not sustain any injuries.

Metro services on the Purple Line were briefly affected, with trains running in a short loop between Mysuru Road and Jnanabharathi stations from 2:13 pm to 2:30 pm. The situation was managed efficiently, and normal service was resumed promptly.

This incident marks the third suicide attempt at Bengaluru Metro stations this year. Following similar incidents in March and August, there is renewed discussion about installing Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) across all 61 stations to prevent such occurrences. However, BMRCL notes that implementing PSDs at all stations would be logistically challenging and costly.

In response to the recent events, BMRCL plans to enhance security measures across stations to better prevent suicide attempts.
