Bengaluru: A 20-year-old woman from Manipur was killed on the spot after a BMTC bus ran over her near Tin Factory junction on Friday morning. The fatal accident occurred at around 9.30 am when the scooter she was travelling on as a pillion rider lost balance after being brushed by the bus, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Hanna Inaka, who was working as a spa worker in the city. The scooter rider, identified as Srikun Saba Inka, sustained minor injuries and survived the incident.
Mahadevapura Traffic Police have arrested the BMTC bus driver and registered a case of death due to negligence.
Accident near KR Puram railway station stretch
According to police, the scooter was heading toward KR Puram when the accident took place near the KR Puram railway station stretch close to Tin Factory junction, one of the city’s busiest traffic corridors.
Investigators said a BMTC bus travelling from Silk Board toward Tin Factory allegedly came at speed and brushed against the front portion of the scooter. The impact destabilised the two-wheeler, causing both riders to fall onto the road.
During the fall, the pillion rider came directly under the path of the bus wheel and was run over, leading to instant death. The rider fell to the side and escaped with minor injuries.
Traffic movement in the area was briefly disrupted following the accident as police secured the spot and shifted the body for further procedures.
Victim was working in city
Police said Hanna Inaka was a native of Manipur and had been working in Bengaluru as a spa employee. Her family members and associates are being contacted and informed about the incident through appropriate channels.
Officials said further formalities, including post-mortem examination and documentation, are being carried out as per legal procedure.
The injured rider received first aid and was later questioned by police as part of the accident inquiry.
Bus driver arrested, negligence case filed
Mahadevapura Traffic Police reached the scene soon after receiving information and conducted a preliminary inspection. Based on initial findings and witness accounts, the BMTC bus driver was taken into custody.
A criminal case has been registered against the driver under provisions relating to causing death by negligence and rash driving. The bus involved in the accident has also been taken for mechanical inspection as part of the probe.
Police said CCTV footage from nearby junction cameras and private establishments is being collected to reconstruct the exact sequence of events and verify vehicle movement and speed.
Tin Factory junction flagged as high-risk zone
Tin Factory junction and the KR Puram corridor are known for heavy and complex traffic flow, including buses, trucks, two-wheelers and metro-related diversions. Traffic experts have often flagged the stretch as accident-prone, especially during peak hours.
Frequent lane changes, merging traffic and high vehicle density increase risk for two-wheeler riders, particularly near junction merges and bus movement corridors.
Police reiterated the need for cautious riding near heavy vehicles and maintaining safe distance from buses and trucks, which have larger blind spots and longer stopping distances.
Investigation under way
Officials said the investigation will examine speed, lane position, braking response and driver conduct at the time of the crash. Statements from the rider, bus passengers and eyewitnesses will be recorded.
Authorities will also review whether traffic rule violations, unsafe overtaking or lane discipline issues contributed to the accident.
Further legal action will proceed based on forensic vehicle inspection, CCTV analysis and witness testimony.
Conclusion
The fatal crash has once again highlighted the vulnerability of two-wheeler riders in high-density traffic zones and the severe consequences of even momentary contact with heavy vehicles. Traffic police said enforcement and awareness efforts will continue, while the case proceeds under law.
