Bengaluru: The price of eggs have been shooting north and worst hit by this price rise are the Anganwadi children and expectant mothers. The reason is that the government is yet to clear the bills of the egg suppliers. Further, the government has been demanding the suppliers to supply the eggs at a cost much lesser than the existing rate. If the suppliers agree to this demand, they would be running into losses.
“Mathrpoorna Scheme” of the state government was started on October 2 with the intention of providing nutritious food to expectant women. Eggs are an integral part of the diet planned under this project. But, the increase in cost of eggs has left the suppliers in lurch. As a result eggs have been dropped from the diet plan. The case is the same even in the Anganwadis.
The traders say that the government pays Rs 5 per egg and now it is difficult to supply the same to the Anganwadi at the same cost. “Eggs are now available at Rs 7. In such a case, we cannot be purchasing eggs at Rs 7 and selling them to the government for Rs 5”, says a trader adding that there is no guarantee that the government will provide the arrears after supplying eggs.
