A 29-year-old MBA student, Nilay Kailash Patil, was tragically found dead on Sunday inside the hostel campus of the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B), just hours before completing his final interview with a private company. Patil, originally from Surat, Gujarat, had celebrated his birthday around 12:30 AM in a friend’s room in a different hostel block.

At approximately 6:30 AM, a security guard discovered Patil lying unconscious on the lawn behind his hostel block. Despite efforts from security personnel who performed CPR, Patil was unresponsive. He was rushed to Fortis Hospital, but was declared dead upon arrival, according to investigators.

Patil’s parents, upon arriving in the city, filed a complaint with Mico Layout police, requesting a detailed investigation into their son’s “suspicious” death. The police have registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which mandates inquiries into deaths under suspicious circumstances. The cause of death will be clarified following the postmortem report, which will guide further investigations.

Preliminary reports show no severe injuries on Patil’s body, though there were scratch marks. The police believe Patil may have slipped from his second-floor balcony while smoking, possibly losing his grip on the low railing. The incident is being treated as an accidental fall, though other possibilities are still being considered. His belongings, including his phone and wallet, were found on his bed, suggesting no forced entry into his room.
