Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has declared a complete restriction on the sale of all types of meat — including chicken, mutton, and others — on Thursday, April 10, 2025, in observance of Mahavir Jayanti.
As per the directive from the Joint Director of BBMP’s Animal Husbandry Department, all slaughterhouses across the city will be closed, and animal slaughter and meat vending will be strictly forbidden within Bengaluru’s limits. This move aligns with the civic body’s tradition of honoring significant religious festivals.
Mahavir Jayanti, a major festival for the Jain community, celebrates the birth of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara in Jainism. As the religion upholds Ahimsa (non-violence) as a core principle, authorities across India, including Bengaluru, impose meat bans to show respect on this holy day.
The BBMP issues similar restrictions on other important days such as Gandhi Jayanti, Ram Navami, and Martyrs’ Day (Sarvodaya Din) — all occasions that emphasize peace and non-violence.
The meat ban will be enforced for the entire day on April 10. Additionally, all government and private schools will remain shut in observance of the festival.
Residents are advised to plan their purchases in advance and respect the sentiments of communities observing the day.
