Bengaluru: The state government has directed the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to continue the Mid Day Meal scheme even during summer holidays that will start on April 10. This instruction has been given for the benefit of the poor families following reports of severe drought in all the districts of the state.

Directions have already been issued to all the school headmasters in this regard, sources in the state education department say. “As per the directions of the state government, mid day meal scheme will continue in the summer holidays also. Block Education Officers (BEOs) have already directed the school headmasters to find out how many students need mid day meals during summer holidays. Based on the information, all the necessary arrangements will be made,” said an officer.

“Few students may opt out of the scheme if they are going out of station during holidays. We have asked the school headmasters to collect written letters from all the parents in this regard,’ he said.

Measure to tackle drought:

According to the officials from the state revenue department, continuation of the mid day meal is one of the measures taken by the state government under relief works. “Children and women are the worst victims of drought. If mid day meal is provided in schools it will ensure that children are saved from starvation. Under Anna Bhagya scheme, government will take care of the rest of the family members,” added an officer from the revenue department.
