Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district administration had a tough time on Tuesday evening as over 1,500 migrant labourers decided to walk their way back home from the Port City.

Irked by the slow and tedious procedures that they had to go through to secure a seat in the transport facilities extended by the government, scores and scores of migrants from Jharkhand pulled up their socks and decided to walk back home.

However, the district administration finally managed to convince them to stay back with a promise that a train will be arranged to ferry them back to their home state on or before May 15.

Workers, who spoke about the difficulties they have been facing eversince the lockdown was announced, said that they are now determined to reach home, even risking their lives.

As they picked their bags and decided to walk,  Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, Commissioner of Police Dr P S Harsha tried to convince them.

However, the migrants were far from understanding the words of the authorties and the elected representatives.

The migrants walked till Adyar Katte stating that their patience has been tested and now they are not in a position to wait any longer.

Later, Dakshina Kannada district Superintendent of Police Dr Lakshmi Prasad intervened and assured them of solving their problem by providing transport facilities on or before May 15.

After the assurances from the district administration, they agreed to stop their journey on feet, but on a condition that if the district administration fails to keep up its words, they will start walking on May 15.

They were sheltered at ‘Buntara Bhavan’ near B C Road. Food was arranged for them by MLA D Vedavyas Kamath.
