In Bengaluru, the rising cost of milk has brought about a new wave of crime: milk packet thefts. Two incidents of milk thefts, which went viral on social media, have caught the attention of vendors, consumers, and the police.
The thefts occurred in the early hours of the morning, when milk distributors are making deliveries or when consumers have yet to pick up their milk packets. In one incident, scooter-borne thieves stole a crate of milk from a roadside booth in the Konanakunte area, near the metro station, on Tuesday. The crates had been left on the roadside by a KMF dairy vehicle, and before the vendor, Dileep, arrived to sell the milk, a group of three thieves on a two-wheeler made off with the crate containing 15 to 20 liters of milk, worth around Rs 1,000. Though CCTV footage captured the theft, the vehicle’s registration number could not be clearly identified. Dileep called the police helpline, and a Hoysala vehicle searched the area, but the suspects were not found.
In another case, residents of Indiranagar posted CCTV footage of two women stealing milk packets from the gates of residences early on Monday morning. While the Indiranagar police have not received an official complaint, they have noted the incident based on the social media post.
