‘Most participants of Markaz event were foreign nationals who came to K’taka’

Bengaluru: Close on the heels of the Nizamuddin Markaz convention proving out to be a major cause of concern, with regard to spread of Coronavirus pandemic, Karnataka state government has said that at least 50 persons who participated in Tableeghi Jamaat Congregation at Nizamuddin, Delhi, who are believed to be from Karnataka are in fact foreign natonals who came over to state.

It may be recalled that one of the COVID-19 victim was from Shira in Tumakuru and this man had attended the convention.

Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that most of the people who had arrived in Karnataka after the congregation are foreign nationals.

“They have been tracked and traced. Out of those who came to Karnataka, 11 are from Indonesia, 10 from Kyrgystan, 1 from France and Kenya. All these people will be quarantined and a detailed health check-up will be done,” he said adding that many foreign nationals had taken part in the convention and they were all given accomodation in various mosques across the country including Karnataka.

He stated that out of the foreign nationals who came to Karnataka, majority of them lived in Bengaluru and they have been in the state capital from first week of March, Bommai was quoted in a TV news channel.

However, Health and Family Welfare Minister B Sriramulu, in a tweet, said, “It is confirmed that 54 people have attended the religious event at Nizamuddin. They have been learnt to be from parts of Bengaluru, Bidar, Gulbarga and Ballari.”

“We have tracked and quarantined 13 of those individuals. They were tested negative for COVID-19, which is a relief. Others are being identified,” he tweeted.
