Mother-Son Duo Allegedly Assault Pourakarmikas Over Garbage Dispute
In a shocking incident, five women pourakarmikas were allegedly abused and assaulted by a mother-son duo in Byadarahalli, west Bengaluru, over a garbage collection disagreement. The incident, which occurred on September 11, went viral on social media. Lakshmi, one of the sweepers, filed a police complaint, and an FIR was lodged under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act and other charges for causing injury and intimidation.
The dispute began when the accused woman demanded the sweepers pick up a large garbage pile outside her home. When the pourakarmikas suggested waiting for an auto tipper due to the volume of the waste, the woman allegedly hurled caste-based insults and called her son to “teach them a lesson.” The son, identified as Chandru, then physically assaulted Lakshmi and her colleagues. Chandru’s mother also joined in the attack, with one of the workers sustaining injuries from broken bangles. Lakshmi’s phone was damaged in the scuffle, and the accused escaped before the police arrived.
Nirmala M, president of the BBMP Pourakarmika Union, condemned the attack and urged the police to arrest the culprits swiftly.
