Namma Metro Phase 2 Costs Balloon by ₹10,000 Crore
Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Phase 2, spanning 75.09 km, has seen its budget skyrocket from ₹30,695 crore to ₹40,614.27 crore due to delays, additional land requirements, and infrastructure expansions. The Finance Department has approved the revised estimate, which now awaits state cabinet clearance.
Construction began in February 2016 with a 2020 deadline, but only 34.65 km has been operationalized as of December 2024. The two new lines face setbacks: the Yellow Line (RV Road-Bommasandra) is ready but awaits trains, while the Pink Line (Kalena Agrahara-Nagavara) is now expected to be completed by December 2026.
Key reasons for the cost hike include delays in civil work, the addition of the Challaghatta station and depot, procurement of 258 extra coaches, a dual-purpose flyover between Ragigudda and Silk Board, and foreign exchange rate fluctuations. Of the ₹9,919.27 crore increase, civil construction alone accounts for ₹4,400 crore.
Phase 2’s revised cost per kilometer is ₹541.09 crore, significantly higher than Phase 1 (₹334.11 crore per km) and Phase 2A/2B (₹254.13 crore per km). Even newer projects like Phase 3A (₹776 crore per km) are setting records as the costliest in Namma Metro’s history.
