A troubling new scam has emerged in the city, with scammers knocking on doors, claiming to need immediate financial assistance for a wedding.

According to a social media post, a local resident was interrupted during their Saturday afternoon routine by a woman in her 40s. The resident, who was napping, was approached by the woman, who asked for ₹15,000 to cover her daughter’s wedding expenses at a nearby temple.

The resident, who only partially understands Kannada, initially struggled to grasp the request but realized it was related to a wedding. “I was confused due to sleepiness, but once I heard ‘maduve’ and saw a young girl, no older than 15, I was shocked and shouted, ‘Marriage??!!’,” the resident recounted on Reddit.

The woman then switched to asking if the resident spoke Telugu or Hindi. When the resident confirmed Telugu, she explained that her daughter’s wedding was imminent, and they urgently needed ₹15,000.

Realizing the urgent nature of the request, the resident declined and shut the door, later regretting their reaction. They questioned whether this might be a new scam targeting unsuspecting individuals and wondered if reporting it to the police would be helpful.

Many online believe the urgency and emotional plea are tactics to quickly obtain money. “It’s definitely a scam. Initially, I thought a small amount wouldn’t matter, but after multiple encounters, I now shut the door immediately to avoid being scammed,” one Reddit user commented.

Several others concurred and shared similar experiences.
