A 26-year-old newlywed woman, who had allegedly attempted suicide earlier this week, died late on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bengaluru. The incident has led to a dowry death case being registered against her husband and his family members.
The deceased has been identified as Ganavi, also known as Rashi, a resident of B Channasandra under the limits of Ramamurthy Nagar in east Bengaluru. Her husband, Suraj, is an employee of a private firm and a resident of BEL Layout in Vidyaranyapura, north Bengaluru.
Found hanging at parental home
According to police, Ganavi was found hanging at her parental home on Wednesday. Family members immediately rushed her to a private hospital, where she was admitted in a comatose condition. Despite sustained medical efforts, she did not respond to treatment and passed away on Thursday night.
After a post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to her family.
Family alleges harassment, stages protest
Following her death, Ganavi’s family reportedly took her body to her husband’s residence and staged a protest, alleging sustained harassment and demanding the arrest of Suraj’s family members. Police from Vidyaranyapura intervened and persuaded the family to take the body back, assuring them of due legal action.
Dowry death case registered
Based on a complaint filed by Ganavi’s father, Shashikumar R, the Ramamurthy Nagar Police registered a case of dowry death against Suraj and his family.
In his complaint, Shashikumar alleged that his daughter was subjected to dowry-related harassment soon after her marriage, which took place on October 29. He further claimed that the family was pressured into hosting an expensive wedding reception at Palace Grounds on November 23, incurring expenses of nearly ₹40 lakh.
Honeymoon cut short, harassment alleged
Police said the couple had travelled to Sri Lanka last week for a 10-day honeymoon. However, according to the complaint, the alleged harassment continued during the trip, forcing Ganavi to cut short the honeymoon and return to Bengaluru on December 21. She had been staying at her parental home since then.
Accused absconding, search on
Suraj and his family members are currently absconding. Police officials said efforts are under way to trace and secure them for questioning.
The case has once again highlighted the persistent issue of dowry harassment and the need for stronger social awareness and timely intervention to protect young women.
