Bengaluru: In a big relief to hundreds of students from Karnataka who want to join the elite National Law School of India University (NLSIU) of the city, henceforth 50% seats available in the institute will be considered as Karnataka quota.

An amendment bill in this regard was passed in both the houses of the state legislature.

As per the new amendment bill 50% of the seats available in the institute, which is located in Nagarabhavi will be filled through Karnataka quota. “Students who have studies in Karnataka for 10 years or whose parents who are residing in the state only can apply for these seats,” explained Minister Basavaraja Rayareddy who moved the bill.

Originally this bill had proposed 30% quota for Karnataka students in the NLSIU admission. But under pressure from the MLAs it was increased to 50%.

According to the higher education department officials, states like Tamilnadu, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana have already have this 50% state quota system.
