Bengaluru: Following Covid 19 outbreak, the state government has decided to postpone the election for the 6,018 grama panchayats across the state. The elections were scheduled in May/ June this year.
Rural Development and Panchayat Raj minister KS Eshwarappa informed that for six months, administrative committees will be formed at each grama panchayat to carry out the administrative works.
Deputy Commissioners of each district will make nominations for these administrative committees. The members will include those who have all the eligibility to become grama panchayat members.
“We will start the election process once the Covid 19 crisis comes down. The committee will be headed by a group A or B level officer,” he said.
The state government’s decision is likely to result in a big controversy.
Congress leader, former CM Siddaramaiah has already raised voice against such a move saying it is undemocratic.
