No parking outside your house without permit

Bengaluru: The new parking policy approved recently has introduced a permit system where the residents have to pay to park their vehicles in the public space in front of their homes.

The permit will be issued as long as parking does not affect the movement of emergency vehicles. The permit is not a guarantee that the spot if free, rather is authorises the hold to park the vehicle at that place. The annual fee of the permit is as follows, Rs 1000 for small cars, Rs 4000 for medium cars and Rs 5000 FOR MUVs/SUVs.

The policy states that the burden of providing parking space for personal vehicles should be on the vehicle owner and not the civic agency. The policy was made in hopes of a steady shift towards sustainable mobility of non-motorised transport. A pilot scheme will be implemented and based on its impact; it will be extended to other areas of the city.

According to a report in the Deccan Herald daily, an activist who has been working for the introduction of parking plans in the city, called the policy “heavily diluted”, which would be hit hard by the result of the pilot plan. He said that all areas under BBMP limits must come under the policy. He also expressed that the people having the luxury of car travel should be made to pay for using public property and that the government has done a great blunder by reducing the permit charges.
