Bengaluru : One thing instructors don’t need to learn from their students is this: Nearly 100 medical colleges nationwide, including a few in Bengaluru, have received show-cause notices from the National Medical Commission (NMC) because some of their faculty members have not maintained the required 75% attendance rate. The notice has given the institutes fifteen days to respond; if they don’t, they risk sanctions.
A source said it’s an ill-kept secret that many medical colleges are facing faculty shortage. The shortage of attendance could mean many faculty members are guest lecturers, which is not permit-ted under NMC rules. As per NMC rules and regulations, faculty and senior resident doctors are required to maintain a minimum attendance of 75% through the Aadhaar-Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS). All medical colleges have to install AEBAS linked to the command-and-control centre of NMC. AEBAS of all staff, preferably with face recognition, should be made available to NMC as well as on the college websites. In spite of repeated reminders, “your medical college has failed to abide by the provisions contained in Minimum Standard Requirements-2023 (MSR 2023),” read the show-cause notice sent to a government college. “We don’t have a list of colleges under RGUHS which have received the notice. Around 100 colleges across India have received it,” said Dr MK Ramesh, vice-chancellor, RGUHS.
