Bengaluru: The Bengaluru police, who have been on the lookout for a notorious criminal for the last 10 years have finally nabbed him, but not before he took one last shot and attacked a police constable with a machete.
The incident took place on the night of December 2, when the constable had gone to arrest the criminal, Palani. He is alleged to have committed numerous crimes including, but not limited to, murder and kidnapping, across the city.
Palani, 32, was finally caught by the Konankunte police at around 11.45 pm on Saturday night. According to police sources, Palani was in a partially constructed building in Kothnoor Dinne with three of his friends, when a resident of the locality asked them to vacate the premises. Angered, four men snatched the resident, Venkatesh Prasad’s gold chain and assaulted his physically challenged father upon entering his house.
An aggrieved Prasad, filed a complaint with the Konankunte police the same night, identifying one of the perpetrators as Palani. The police, realising that they had finally found the elusive criminal, jumped into action and tracked him down to a government school where he was in hiding.
The police had an encounter with Palani, where the latter struck the police jeep with his machete. A warning shot was fired into the air by Inspector Dharmendra, but undetered, Palani lunged at constable Kiran Kumar and attacked his had with the machete. He was shot in his left leg in a bid to subdue him and prevent further casualties. He was arrested, shortly after which he was taken to Victoria Hospital for treatment. The constable suffered minor injuries in the attack.
Palani’s long time accomplices – Karawada, Dileep and Hajaam – are currently absconding. They have also been accused of the same crimes as Palani.
