Bengaluru: A viral social media post recounting the sudden layoff of a senior Oracle engineer in Bengaluru has sparked widespread discussion about job security in the technology industry and the uncertainties even experienced professionals face.

The post, shared on X by a user named Ayesha, narrates the story of a Principal Software Engineer who reportedly lost his job after 13 years with Oracle despite recently being recognised for his leadership and performance.
A successful career ended overnight
According to the post, the engineer was earning an annual salary of ₹50 lakh and had recently moved his ageing parents to Bengaluru to live with him. To accommodate his family, he had rented a larger apartment at a monthly rent of ₹80,000.
Just two weeks before the layoff, he had reportedly received a spot award for his outstanding contributions and leadership.
However, the following day, without any prior discussion or warning from his manager, he allegedly received an automated email from the Human Resources department informing him that his role had been eliminated as part of a company restructuring exercise.
The engineer is said to be the sole breadwinner for his family, with one child preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and another pursuing college education.

The story quickly gained traction on X, drawing over a thousand likes and numerous comments from users sharing similar experiences.
One user claimed that a family member with nearly 20 years at Oracle in Bengaluru was among an entire team that was laid off. Another shared that a friend who had spent around a decade at Dell and earned nearly ₹45 lakh annually had struggled to secure another senior leadership role despite searching for over a year.
Several users expressed concern over the growing trend of experienced professionals being replaced by lower-cost talent, arguing that while such decisions may reduce expenses in the short term, they could affect product quality, institutional knowledge and engineering leadership over time.
