Bengaluru: A day after five persons died when two buildings caved in, data collected by the fire department’s revealed that over 35,000 multi-storey buildings in the city are unsafe for habitation.
According to the authorities, the department has issued permission (No Objection Certificate) to only around 5,000 buildings. Without receiving the NOC from the fire department, the BBMP has given occupancy certificates.
“As per the rule, the multi-storey buildings must get an NOC from the fire department to carry out to relief works during emergencies. But this rule has been violated. This is now resulting in more building collapses, fire mishaps etc,” informed an officer from the department.
Meanwhile, the BBMP authorities have informed that a comprehensive policy with regard to the safety of under-construction buildings will be notified soon.
