Bengaluru: The state education department, on Friday, slashed students’ tuition fees for the academic year 2020-21 by 30 per cent. This fee reduction is applicable to all schools, private and state syllabus.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar announced on Friday that schools cannot charge other fees like term fees, or school development fees.

Speaking to the media, minister Suresh Kumar informed that the decision to slash the fees was arrived at after a discussion was held with stakeholders like parents and private unaided schools. Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa was also consulted on the issue as parents have been finding it difficult to pay the fees and the schools have to pay teachers’ salaries.

If any schools want to charge a lesser fee, they are welcome to do so, said the minister, adding that those parents who have already paid more fees can have the same adjusted in the next year.

Those parents who are yet to pay the fees should be allowed the option of paying the same in installments, he said.

Suresh Kumar also added that a state-level committee with powers is being formed to deal with the differences between the school administrations and parents with regard to the fees.
