Parks still playing gatekeeper? BBMP urges public to report entry denials
The BBMP has issued a stern public advisory asking Bengalureans to report any park that denies entry during official hours, following complaints that some parks still adhere to outdated schedules.
In June 2024, the Karnataka government revised park timings across the city to make them more resident-friendly. All parks under BBMP control were mandated to remain open from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, dropping the previous midday closure from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm. The move aimed to boost accessibility and promote healthier urban lifestyles.
Yet, violations persist, with several parks still shutting their gates outside the old 5:00 am to 8:00 pm window. Frustrated by repeated non-compliance, the BBMP is now empowering citizens to act, encouraging them to submit photographic evidence when denied entry during valid hours.
“No BBMP park can enforce restricted entry under the new rules. If you’re stopped, report it immediately with proof,” the civic agency urged in its release.
This development places accountability in public hands, reinforcing that public spaces belong to the people and must remain open as per the revised mandate. The move also signals a shift towards more citizen-driven oversight in Bengaluru’s civic functioning.
