Bengaluru: A Metro passenger sparked panic on Friday afternoon after jumping off platform 3 on the Green Line of the Namma Metro between Madavara and Silk Institute stations around 3:17 p.m.. Quick response from on-ground staff prevented a major tragedy.

Swift response from Metro officials

According to officials of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the incident occurred when the passenger suddenly leapt onto the tracks. Staff stationed nearby immediately cut off the power supply to ensure safety and rushed to rescue the individual. “Our emergency team responded within seconds, and the person was safely pulled out from the tracks,” said a BMRCL spokesperson.

The passenger was shifted to Victoria Hospital for medical attention. His condition and the circumstances leading to the incident are yet to be officially confirmed.

Metro services briefly disrupted

The incident disrupted operations on the Green Line for about 30 minutes, affecting thousands of commuters during the afternoon rush. During the rescue operation, trains were temporarily operated only between Madhavara and Rajajinagar, and National College to Silk Institute stations.

Normal Metro services resumed at 3:47 p.m., once power supply and safety checks were completed on the affected stretch.

Investigation underway

While officials have not ruled out the possibility of a suicide attempt, an internal inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause. BMRCL has urged passengers to remain behind safety markings and report any suspicious or distressed behaviour to Metro staff immediately.

Safety protocols followed

This incident once again highlights the importance of safety systems built into Bengaluru Metro’s operations. Each station is equipped with emergency power controls, CCTV surveillance, and trained staff to respond to track intrusions swiftly.

In recent years, the BMRCL has been considering installation of platform screen doors at select high-traffic stations to prevent such incidents.

For now, Metro operations are back to normal, and authorities have assured commuters that all safety checks have been completed on the Green Line.
