Bengaluru: Shocked and disturbed over the recent attacks on police by miscreants, Police Commissioner T Sunil Kumar on Saturday issued an order to police to open fire on miscreants in self defence.

“Fire arms are given to the police to open fire during emergencies. They can open fire in self defence if miscreants attack them,’’ Police Commissioner said.

He said the orders were issued to police to take stringent action against rowdy elements in the city.

“I have instructed all Deputy Commissioners in the city not to show any leniency on anti-social elements who prevent police discharging duties,’’ he said.

Now, the policemen on night beat have to carry fire arms. “Four policemen will be on beat as against the two policemen till now at every locality. This measure has been taken to safeguard police from the miscreants,’’ he said.

Special teams

The Police Commissioner has said special police teams have been formed to nab the accused in JJ Nagar incident where a rowdy-sheeter attacked a police constable.

“A special team has been formed under the Deputy Commissioner of Police to arrest the accused persons in Kodigehalli incident. The miscreants took away a fire arm of Kodigehalli police when the latter fell off from their bike while chasing the former. The miscreants made away with the fire arm to prevent the police open fire on them. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused,’’ he said.

All are not rowdy elements

The Police Commissioner has said one of the accused in HBR Layout incident is from Congo. “The accused is a lady. She, in an inebriated condition, attacked a police constable. I have to appreciate the police constable for his presence of mind and patience. In Jeevan Bhima Nagar incident, the accused are from Kerala working at a software company in Bengaluru. All the accused in these incidents were arrested and produced in the court. Now they are in judicial custody,’’ he said.

Bars and wine shops

The Police Commissioner has said the police sub-inspectors are empowered to close the bars and wine shops for violation of norms.

“We have ordered the closure of around 30 bars and wine shops for violating the norms. I gave strict instructions to the Deputy Commissioners to keep an eye on the bars and wine shops that remain open even after the stipulated time at night,’’ he said.

When asked whether the police department mulls on revising the timings for bars and restaurants in the city, the Police Commissioner has said there was no such proposal.

SIT formed

The Police Commissioner has formed a special investigation team (SIT) to find missing software engineer Kumar Ajitabh.

“I have constituted a SIT as per the High Court direction. The SIT consists with 40 police inspectors. It is functioning under the supervision of Additional Commissioner of Police (Bangalore East) Seemanth Kumar Singh. I am ready to provide as many policemen as the SIT needed. I am monitoring the progress of the probe on a daily basis,’’ he said.
