Bengaluru: #savekambala, #Isupportkambala these are the two trending topics on both Facebook as well as Twitter on Saturday and Sunday, following union government’s decision to clear the Jallikattu ordinance prepared by the Tamilnadu government.
On Facebook #savekambala was one of the most searched subjects with around 90,000 users using this hashtag followed by #Isupportkambala which was searched by around 20,000 users. Similar trend was reported even on micro blogging site twitter. A Facebook page I Support Kambala has been created to bring all the agitators together. #Karnataka Pride Kambala is the another popular hash tag.
Interestingly support for the Kambala has poured from across the state even though this folk game form is celebrated only in undivided Dakshina Kannada district. Several protests are planned in next few days in parts of the Bengaluru city which were supported by various local cultural and Kannada organisations.
Sandalwood support: Interestingly issue surrounding the ban on Kambala and need of a Jallikattu type protest was first racked up by cine star Mr. Jaggesh which went viral and brought like-minded organisations together. A tweet by Jaggesh in support of Kambala evoked good response on twitter leading to public debate. Cine starts having their roots in South Canara including Rakshith Shetty, Rishab Shetty, Shuba Punja also have raised their voice in support of Kambala.
Kambala is rural sport witnessed only in coastal belt where buffaloes are raced on a wetland. The sport specifically takes place during February to May.
