Bengaluru: Lokayukta Justice Y Bhaskar Rao on Friday took suo motu action against the Principal Secretary to the Primary and Secondary Education Department and the Director of Pre-University Education Board taking cognizance of a report on the plight of second-year PU students.

Justice Rao directed the officials to personally appear before him and submit a compliance report on or before May 30. “Both the Principal Secretary and the Director of PU Board are directed to immediately take steps to rectify the errors and provide all facilities for re-totalling, revaluation and providing of answer scripts so that the rights of the students and their future is not hampered”, he said.

In his order, Rao referred to the report on the anger of II PUC students, which was published in Express on Friday. Justice Rao said that he took suo motu cognizance of the matter under Section 7(1)(b) of the Karnataka Lokayukta Act.

Referring to Rules 28, 29 and 30 of the Karnataka Pre-University Course State Level Public Examination Rules, 1997, Justice Rao said that retotaling of marks, revaluation of answer scripts and issuing of photocopies of the answer scripts to the candidates are mandatory. The authorities must strictly comply them so that the students’ future is not hampered, he stated.

Maladministration in the process of conducting examination, evaluating answer scripts, tabulating marks and publishing results affects the rights of students, he added.

He also took note of the complaint filed by parents’ associations and students who met him on Friday. They demanded that CET results be postponed and sought action against the PU Board Director.

There were mistakes by students (in entering registration numbers) as well as invigilators (who failed to find students’ mistakes)

During revaluation, if the difference in marks is 1-6, there will be no change in marks officially

If it is more that six, the marks will be changed, applicant reimbursed

So far, the PUE Department has received 2,825 applications for revaluation, 20,623 for copy of answer script

Surprisingly, the helpline opened by the department (080-230 839 00) was not active till 6 pm on Friday

The CET schedule will be revised. Seat allotment will be postponed to the first week of July

Notice has been issued to those who made mistakes while setting question papers
