Bengaluru: In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the PwC India Foundation (PwCIF) on 1 September inaugurated a sanitation facility at Taverekere Government High School in Hoskote in Bengaluru, as part of its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme. Under this project, toilets are refurbished and hand washing units are constructed to enable hand washing for basic hygiene. In Hoskote, five toilets were refurbished and three handwashing units were set up, apart from constructing four new toilets blocks for girls.

Jaivir Singh, Vice Chairman, PwC India Foundation said, “WASH is one of PwCIF’s focus areas and we are glad that over 11000 school children across Ajmer, Hyderabad and Kolkata have so far benefitted from our interventions under the initiative. We are looking forward to provide children in Hoskote not just infrastructural support, but also empower them and their families by creating awareness and aiding behavior change with regard to sanitation.

Lack of sanitation facilities has been a major challenge and reason for drop out of students especially girls from schools. There was also a need to create awareness about menstrual hygiene. We are hopeful that our intervention will contribute towards retaining children in schools. Apart from the Ayammas (helpers) provided by our NGO partner Reaching Hand, PwC India volunteers would also work towards making our efforts more sustainable and meaningful,” Singh added.

Arunkumar BS, PwC India; N Nagaraj, MLA; Shesha Saiana Karinja, Department of Public Instructions officer (DDPI); S N Kannaiah, BEO; Akhaya Sagar, Chief Operating Officer, Reaching Hand; Feba Nisha, Program Manager, Reaching Hand; and Khandappa, Program Coordinator, Reaching Hand were also present at the inaugural function.
