Bengaluru‘s relentless downpour on Monday turned deadly as an elderly man and a young boy were electrocuted in a flooded apartment basement, underscoring the city’s ongoing struggle with monsoon mismanagement.
At around 6:15 pm, Manmohan Kamath (63) was operating a motor pump to flush out water from the inundated basement of Madhuvan Apartments in BTM 2nd Stage. A short circuit led to his electrocution. Tragically, Dinesh (12), who was also in the submerged cellar, suffered a fatal shock as well.
The city recorded a massive 104 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, swamping low-lying areas and triggering massive traffic snarls. Visuals from across Bengaluru showed severe waterlogging, with roads submerged and vehicles stranded—an all-too-familiar monsoon misery for the tech hub.
In a separate rain-related tragedy, Sasikala (35) lost her life when a compound wall collapsed on her while she was at work.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and nearby regions, warning of more rain in the next two days.
Home Minister G Parameshwara acknowledged the crisis and stated that the newly formed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), replacing BBMP, was working to address severe waterlogging. He blamed clogged drains, caused by leaf litter and debris, for much of the flooding.
As the rain continues, Bengaluru braces for more disruption—with lives already lost, patience runs thin.
